Jean Hegarty – Chief Audiologist

Jean Hegarty – Chief Audiologist

Jean is the Chief Audiologist in Cork, working at the Regional Audiology Centre at the South Infirmary Victoria Universtiy Hospital (SIVUH) Cork City. She is currently the only diagnostic audiologist & hearing therapist in Ireland and benefits from over 20 years of experience in audiological assessment, treatment and consultation.


The field of audiology and the development of innovative devices is one which is heavily researched and is constantly evolving. Through her work with the Irish Academy of Audiology (IAA) (president for four years) and the Irish Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists (ISHAA) of which she is an active member, Jean stays up to date with current innovations in audiological assessment techniques and state-of-the-art devices in order to provide the best service for her patients and their treatment needs.

Jean specialises in tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) and attends all conferences worldwide on the subject. She provides tinnitus retraining therapy and adult rehabilitation, and provides a full and comprehensive rehabilitation service. Jean also provides a comprehensive paediatric hearing assessment, diagnosis and treatment service. Jean is the only diagnostic and hearing therapist in Ireland.


Career History

Jean began her career as a state registered nurse developed an interest in audiology while working as Nurse Manager in the Ear, Nose and Throat Department at the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital (SIVUH) in Cork.
Jean continued to develop her knowledge of audiology and in 1992, she qualified as a diagnostic audiologist from the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
After qualifying as a diagnostic audiologist, Jean continued to study all aspects of Audiology and qualified as a hearing therapist from UCD in 2004.
Jean is the former president of the Irish Society of Audiology (ISA), a position she held for 4 years. She is now the immediate post president of the IAA, the Irish Academy of Audiology (4 years) and is an active member of the Irish Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists (ISHAA).
